| Personal History | Derick Adam Irvin was born on Earth in 2365, while his youth was spent watching the events of the galaxy playout on news broadcasts he never regarded them with much concern not because of ignorance but because his father a reserve officer would be called up in a time of crisis to serve. Derick didn't really express any interest in serving in Starfleet until his late teens when on a dare he took the entry exams and passed them. His family showed mixed emotions on that success his father largely remaining silent on the matter until days before he departed to the academy where they had not only a heated argument they haven't spoken since that day in 2383. His first year in the academy was an academic success by his standards, he finished the year in the top 20 of his class, with high marks in history and even tactical study. During a break between years at the academy he met with a mysterious benefactor whom offered him an opportunity to do some extra curricular studies as a student, Derick found the work stimulating and very rewarding, his paper Tactical failures are lessons learned was met with a mixture of hostility and interest from many officers who read the paper. For the next three years the fallout both negative and positive followed him all the way into his first assignment in 2388. Derick spent the first five year of his career behind a desk, most of his work consisted of analyzing the mountains reports from the Dominion war, the number of various reports from any number of other encounters. During this time he began authoring a second paper which was published in 2389 titled The Dominion War influence. This paper broke down the tactics of the various commanders of note from the Dominion war and how their tactics evolved, this paper was received with more praise and earned the interest of a number of commanders through out the fleet. Derick finally got to put his tactical analytics to the test when he was assigned to be a tactical and intelligence officer for a fleet war game exercise, while only a training exercise he managed to prove that the Fleet's tactical practices have not changed with those alliances that look at the federation as a hostile force, but with success comes failure, Derick was abruptly reassigned to a number of short term field assignments where he found himself a social outcast in some sense as he wouldn't be around long enough to make any real friends. Derick rarely talks about his personal life but it's speculated that his relationships have suffered as a result of the constant movement. |
